Undergraduate Admission: Merit Scholarships

 

Selection Criteria for Prospective Students

Eligibility requires that applications for fall admission be received by February 1st . Other applications will NOT be considered. Scholarships are renewable for up to seven consecutive semesters for those students who maintain continuous, full time enrollment and a minimum grade point average of 3.00 (unless otherwise specified).  All award amounts for academic year (fall and spring semesters).

First Year Scholarships

  • Presidential Scholarships:Awarded to those applicants applying for fall admission and meeting the following criteria

    In-State Students:

    • Presidential Dirigo Scholarship
      • Standardized Test Scores
        • Minimum 1100 SAT Reasoning Test score
          (Critical Reading and Math only)
        • Minimum 24 ACT composite score
      • Top 10% of graduating class or A- high school average
      • Awarded in the amount of $1,750

Out-of-state Students

  • Presidential Commendation Scholarship
    • Standardized Test Scores
      • Minimum 1100 SAT Reasoning Test score (Critical Reading and Math only)
      • Minimum 24 ACT composite score
    • Top 10% graduating class or A- high school average
    • Awarded in the amount of $6,100
       
  • Presidential Recognition Scholarship
    • Standardized Test Scores
      • Minimum 1000 SAT Reasoning Test score (Critical Reading and Math only)
      • Minimum 21 ACT composite score
    • Top 30% graduating class or B high school average
    • Awarded in the amount of $3,950

  • Opportunity Scholarship (Awarded on a limited basis)
    • Standardized Test Scores:
      • Minimum 950 SAT Reasoning Test score
        (Critical Reading and Math only)
      • Minimum 20 ACT composite score
    • top 30% of graduating class or B grade point average
    • Must display a proven commitment to and involvement in one's community
    • Member of “underrepresented group" at the University of Southern Maine which may include:
      • Ethnic, racial, social or demographic background
      • 1 st Generation College student 
      • Residence in certain Maine counties
    • Awarded in the amount of $1,200

International Scholarships

  • International Student Merit Scholarship
    • Offered on a very limited basis
    • Recipients determined on strength of academic record and test scores
    • Awarded in the amount of full tuition or half tuition for the duration of F-1 student visa status, estimated to be 4 years
    • Renewal based on yearly review of student's grade point average and progress toward completion of selected program of study

Office of Transfer Affairs Student Scholarships

  • Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Scholarship (Awarded on a limited basis)

    Transfer Affairs in the USM Office of Undergraduate Admission promotes the continued education of exemplary students who have earned an associate degree at a community or technical college. Membership in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is a pre-requisite for consideration. All transfer students meeting the following criteria are automatically considered for this award.     • Member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society
    • 3.25 GPA and an A.A., A.S. or A.A.S. degree from a community or technical college (Non-U. S. citizens and students with previous bachelor's degree are not eligible)
    • Applying for fall admission and intending to enroll full-time
    • Completed application on file by May 1st
    • Awarded in the amount of $500 per semester (fall and spring semesters only)
    • Renewable for up to three consecutive semesters

Deferring Admission and Merit Scholarships

Merit Scholarships for incoming students are offered for the semester into which the Merit Scholar was admitted. The Undergraduate Admission Scholarship Committee will reserve the award for a student who returns the Scholarship Acceptance Agreement Form and successfully defers for a semester or an academic year. Securing a deferral of admission entails submitting the $100 enrollment deposit and enrolling in no more than 9 credit hours at another regionally accredited institution.
