Undergraduate Admission: Merit Scholarships

 

Selection Criteria for Current Students

Students applying for fall admission who meet all the selection criteria for a specific scholarship will be considered for the award:

First Year Scholarships

  • Maine Scholars Award (no longer awarded)
    • Charged Maine resident tuition
    • Standardized Test Scores:
      • 1100 or higher total score on “old” SAT Reasoning Test (or 1100 combined score on the Critical Reading and Math portions of SAT Reasoning Test)
      • 24 or higher composite score on ACT
    • top 10% of graduating class or A- overall grade point average
    • Exhibited excellence in one's school or community
    • Must meet or exceed minimum university-wide requirements
    • Awarded in the amount of $3,100 for campus residents and $2,100 for commuters
    • Renewable for up to seven consecutive semesters.
       
  • Outstanding Student Merit Scholarship (no longer awarded)
    • Charged non-Maine resident tuition
    • Standardized Test Scores:
      • 1100 or higher total score on “old” SAT Reasoning Test (or 1100 combined score on the Critical Reading and Math portions of SAT Reasoning Test)
      • 24 or higher composite score on ACT
    • top 15% of high school graduating class or B overall grade point average
    • Exhibited excellence in one's school or community
    • Must meet or exceed minimum university-wide requirements
    • Awarded in the amount of $5,300 for campus residents and $4,300 for commuters
      • Students charged the NEBHE tuition rate will receive $3,700 if living on campus and $2,700 if commuting
    • Renewable for up to seven consecutive semesters.

  • Opportunity Scholarship:
    • Standardized Test Scores:
      • 950 combined in Critical Reading and Math portions of SAT Reasoning Test)
      • 20 or higher composite score on ACT
    • top 25% of high school graduating class or B- overall grade point average
    • Need to have application postmarked by January 2 nd and completed application on file by February 1 st
    • Must meet or exceed minimum university-wide requirements
    • Must display a proven commitment to and involvement in one's community
    • Member of “underrepresented group” at the University of Southern Maine which may include:
      • Ethnic, racial, social or demographic group
      • 1 st Generation College student
      • Majoring or participating in certain academic programs
      • Resident of certain states or Maine counties
    • Awarded in the amount of $1,000
    • Renewable for up to seven consecutive semesters.

 

International Scholarships

  • International Student Merit Scholarship
    • Offered on a very limited basis
    • Recipients determined on strength of academic record and test scores
    • Awarded in the amount of full tuition or half tuition for the duration of F-1 student visa status, estimated to be 4 years
    • Renewal based on yearly review of student's grade point average and progress toward completion of selected program of study

  • Seeds of Peace Scholarship (Award suspended beginning Fall 2006)
    • One scholarship awarded each academic year
    • Recipients determined on strength of academic record, test scores and recommendation from Seeds of Peace organization
    • Awarded in the full amount of tuition, room and board and mandatory fees for the duration of F-1 student visa status, estimated to be 4 years

 

Office of Transfer Student Scholarships

  • Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Scholarship
    • 3.25 GPA and an A.A., A.S. or A.A.S. degree from a community or technical college (Non-U. S. citizens and students with previous bachelor's degree are not eligible)
    • Completed application on file by July 1st
    • Awarded in the amount of $1,000
    • Possible receipt of this scholarship for a total of two years

Deferring Admission and Merit Scholarships

Merit Scholarships for incoming students are offered for the semester into which the Merit Scholar was admitted. The Undergraduate Admission Scholarship Committee will reserve the award for a student who returns the Scholarship Acceptance Agreement Form and successfully defers for a semester or an academic year. Securing a deferral of admission entails submitting the $100 enrollment deposit and enrolling in no more than 9 credit hours at a regionally accredited institution.
