Leadership Studies in South Africa
May 22-June 5, 2010
LOS 470 (6 Undergraduate Credits) or LOS 670 (3 Graduate Credits)
The goal of this interdisciplinary program is to familiarize you with key issues, theories, and practices in intercultural leadership and to provide you with the knowledge, tools, and multi-cultural experiences necessary to be an effective, globally aware leader. After several months of study examining the socio-cultural, historical, and philosophical aspects of leadership from a global perspective, we will visit South Africa to explore a number of historical and cultural sites. While in South Africa, we will conduct in depth visits with a variety of leaders who operate in a diversity of multi-cultural contexts to help you become more adept in multi-cultural situations and thus more competitive in the global marketplace.
Through the program readings, site experiences, and reflection exercises, you will examine a wide range of leadership situations and the cultural factors that influence the quality of a leader's performance in these environments. In order to help you apply the literature to your experiences, you will be given a number of opportunities to articulate your ideas about the concepts we will be exploring through presentation, group discussion, and both formal and informal writing. LOS 470 is listed as a six credit undergraduate course and LOS 670 is listed as a three credit graduate course in the spring term course offerings.
