MAEA VISUAL ARTS CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK
Creative Expression Cultural Heritage Criticism & Aesthetics

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT SCOPE AND SEQUENCE GUIDE

The scope and sequence guide for the Framework is a combination of the original Maine Art Education Curriculum Framework (1989-90) program goals and objectives chart (scope and sequence) and the Maine Learning Results Content Standards and Performance Indicators. Teachers familiar with the Learning Results and/or the original Framework should note the following:

1. Each of the three standards, Creative Expression, Cultural Heritage, and Criticism and Aesthetics, has its own chart. However, this format of thirds does not imply that art curriculums should emphasize these three equally. Art teachers should choose how much emphasis should be applied in each area.

2. Since Maine schools use Performance Indicators to revise their curriculums, they have been used as the base for the new guide.

3. Several objectives, from the original Framework and those created at the October 9, 1998 workshop, have been included.

4. A few objectives have been moved to more appropriate locations in the charts.

5. All text relating to dance, music, and theatre has been deleted. A few word changes were made to clarify meaning.

6. The original numbering for the Performance Indicators remains but is in parentheses.

7. A letter designation system has been added to make referring to the objectives in the new guide easier.

8. The arrows indicate that an objective continues to be developed across grades with increasing levels of sophistication.

9. Related objectives have been grouped under appropriate headings.

10. In this guide, the term “form” relates to visual art forms (alphabetically listed): architecture and environmental art, ceramics, communication design, drawing, electronic arts, fine crafts, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.

11. Teachers should use these objectives and expand upon them in planning cumulative and sequential curriculums that fit their students' needs
