In both operas, wills are
"adjusted" after the death of wealthy relatives. Protagonists
are rescued from "hell" and the fate of young lovers is sealed.
In the tear-jerker, Sour Angelica, a young woman condemned
for bearing an illegitimate child seeks release through an early
death. In the comedy, Gianni Schicchi, a
rehabilitated rogue wittily overrides class prejudice and unbridled
greed in favor of love. The music, sung in English, is a treat
for both the opera enthusiast and those new to the art form.
