The dark patches, once thought to have been seas of water, are now known to be regions that were covered by volcanic lava flows more than three billion years ago. Each of these dark regions has been assigned sea names, such as Mare Nubium ("The Sea of Clouds") and Mare Crisium ("The Sea of Storms")
