Lifetime Physical Fitness & Wellness (CON 219)
The primary emphasis of
this course is to teach students how to take control of their personal health
and lifestyle habits. Major areas include nutrition/weight management,
fitness training techniques, flexibility, coronary risk factor management,
muscular strength/ endurance, stress management and other wellness-related
topics. Class content includes lecture/discussion and in-class laboratory
evaluations. Credits: 3
Lifetime Physical Fitness & Wellness Online (CON 219)
The primary emphasis of this course is to teach students how to take control of their personal health and lifestyle habits. Major areas will include nutrition/weight management, fitness training techniques, flexibility, coronary risk factor management, muscular strength/ endurance, stress management and other wellness-related topics. Class content will include readings, discussions, self-assessment activities, and development of personalized nutrition and physical activity plans. Credits: 3 Welcome Video Clip
Exercise Leadership (SPM 260)
An overview of the knowledge,
skills, and abilities needed by fitness instructors to plan, implement, and
evaluate safe and effective exercise programs. Emphasis is on exercise programs
for individuals. Prerequisites: HEF, EXS major; SPM 100 or concurrent; CON
219 or concurrent. Credits: 3
Group Exercise Instruction (SPM 315)
Provides knowledge, skills,
and practical experience needed to plan, lead, and evaluate a variety of group
exercise sessions effectively. Developing and leading various components of
group exercise sessions constitute a major part of this course. Prerequisites:
EXS, HEF major; SPM 260. Credits: 3
Methods of Resistance Training & Conditioning (SPM 325)
Theoretical and practical
study of practices and methods involved in developing and implementing resistance
training and conditioning programs for clinical and non-clinical populations.
Prerequisites: ALT, EXS, HEF major; BIO 211, 212; CON 219. Credits: 3
Health Promotion Programs (SPM 350)
Examines the assessment,
planning, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion programs in a
variety of settings. Prerequisites: SPM 230; CON 219. Credits: 3
Independent Study in Health Fitness (SPM 398)
Provide majors in the Department
of Sports Medicine with an opportunity to pursue a project independently.
Students should select a faculty advisor and develop a course proposal with
that person. A final written paper is required. Prerequisites: ALT, EXS, HEF
major; junior or senior standing. Credits: 1-6
Exercise for Special Populations (SPM 450)
Focus on exercise
programming guidelines and recommendations for a variety of special populations.
Prerequisites: ALT, EXS, HEF major; SPM 430 or concurrent.
Credits: 3
Fitness Facility Management (SPM 481)
An introduction
to the management and operation of health fitness facilities. Knowledge and
skills needed to plan, lead, manage and evaluate various health fitness programs
will be discussed. Prerequisites: senior level HEF major. Credits: 3
Clinical Internship (SPM 495)
This culminating experience
for health fitness majors provides the opportunity
for students to apply knowledge and skills gained through didactic, practicum,
and laboratory experiences to a health fitness
work setting. Prerequisites: HEF major: All HEF major requirements completed
or concurrent. Credits: 9-12
