Charlotte Rosenthal began studying Russian during high school back when the “Cold War” was very hot. She received an M. A. in Slavic linguistics from the University of Chicago, and a Ph. D. in Russian literature and language from Stanford University. Professor Rosenthal’s research interests mainly concern Russian literature and culture during the period called “the Silver Age” or the turn of the twentieth century, just before the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. She is a co-editor of the unique Dictionary of Russian Women Writers and the author of a number of articles on writers of the “Silver Age.” Most recently she has concentrated on the popular writer Anastasiia Verbitskaia. At USM she is also a member of the Women and Gender Studies council.
Prof. Rosenthal has been visiting Russia since 1973 on grants from the International Research and Exchanges Board, the American Council of Teachers of Russian (Fulbright-Hayes), and the US Department of State Fulbright Committee. She loves to play tennis and ride horses. One of her fondest memories is riding horses at Tolstoy’s beautiful estate, Yasnaya Polyana.
